Why is there Greek Yogurt added into this cake recipe?

Now you know our little secret! Adding in Greek yogurt to cake or cupcake recipes is a great way to add moisture to your baking. It keeps moist, a little dense and is such a simple thing you can literally add to almost anything.

Can you substitute sour cream for the Greek Yogurt?

Of course you can! We always tend to use whatever we have on hand. We have used full fat sour cream instead of the Greek yogurt when we have had to but we almost always have Greek yogurt in the house.

Isn’t the cocoa bitter in this recipe?

While eating cocoa on its own is bitter, combined with all the other ingredients like butter and sugar, it’s not. It adds that delicious chocolate taste to this cake and is something that you’re going to really enjoy. (If you’re worried about sweetness, you can always add in some chocolate chips!)

Ingredients

Cake:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • cup cocoa powder

  • 2 sticks butter

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Cheesecake portion:

  • 8 oz. softened cream cheese

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ cup sugar

Ganache:

  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips (can add up to ⅓ cup more for a thicker texture)

  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Stir flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder then set aside.

  • In a large bowl, beat sugar and butter until smooth. Beat in eggs, then gradually beat in your flour mixture until fully incorporated. (Mixture will be thick and firm)

  • Beat in yogurt and milk until smooth and creamy, then set aside.

  • Make your cheesecake layer by mixing cream cheese, egg, vanilla, and sugar together in a separate bowl.

  • Now, to build your cake: Pour half of your chocolate batter into a prepared bundt pan, then follow by dropping spoonfuls of cheesecake on top. Spread lightly with a spatula, then finish with remaining chocolate batter.

  • Bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Depending on the size of your bundt pan, you might need more or less time.

  • When cooked and slightly cooled, turn your cake out onto a plate to cool completely.

  • Make ganache by pouring hot heavy cream over chocolate chips, letting it sit for 5 minutes before whisking vigorously to blend.

  • Drizzle over your bundt cake and let it set for at least 20 minutes. Enjoy!
