Slab Apple Pie

When's the last time that you had a nice warm piece of Slab Apple Pie? And if you aren't quite certain about what a slab pie is, you're in for a true treat, my friends.

Ingredients

Crust

  • 3 ¼ cups flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • cup milk

Filling

  • 8 cups peeled and sliced apples
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup crushed cornflakes
  • 1 egg white, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions


  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.



  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and shortening. Cut shortening
    into flour until the mixture is crumbly.



  • Add in eggs and milk and mix until doughy. Break dough into two, and
    chill for 20 minutes.



  • Roll one of the balls of dough out to fit the bottom and sides of a 15 x10
    baking sheet.
    Spread the apples over the pie crust.



  • Mix the seasonings and cornflakes and then spread evenly over the
    apples.



  • Roll out the second piecrust and cover the pie with it. Seal the top and
    bottom crusts together. Make several slits on the top of the pie to
    let steam out. Brush with egg white.



  • Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes and then reduce the heat to 350 and
    bake for another 25-30 minutes or until nicely golden.
