🔪 How to Make Conversation Heart Cookies

These cookies look extra fancy, but thanks to the special cookie cutters used, it’s actually so easy! It’s really just a simple sugar cookie recipe with a unique cookie cutter.

Step 1: Combine the Wet Cookie Ingredients

Cream the butter, sugar, and egg in a stand mixer or in a large bowl with a hand mixer. Then, add the vanilla and mix until blended.

Step 2: Combine the Dry Cookie Ingredients

Mix the flour and salt in a separate bowl.

Step 3: Make the Cookie Dough

Add the dry ingredients to the wet and blend until you make a smooth dough.

Step 4: Color the Dough

Divide the dough evenly into 5 bowls. Then, add food coloring gel to each bowl and mix it into the dough until well combined and it reaches your desired color intensity. It usually takes about 3 drops to make the ideal color.

Step 5: Roll and Cut the Dough

Place the dough pieces on a floured surface, sprinkle with flour, and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Then, cut the dough into hearts with the heart cookie cutter. Finally, use the cookie stamps to stamp different Conversation heart messages into the cookies.

Step 6: Bake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Butter softened
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla
  • 2 ½ cups Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • Pink food coloring gel
  • Blue food coloring gel
  • Yellow food coloring gel
  • Green food coloring gel
  • Purple food coloring gel

Instructions

  • In the mixing bowl of a Stand Mixer, add the Butter, Sugar, and Egg, and blend with the Whisk attachment until smooth, and creamy.
  • Add the Vanilla, and mix until blended. In a separate bowl, add the Flour, and Salt, and mix well to blend.
  • Add the Flour mixture to the mixing bowl, and mix until blended, and smooth.
  • Divide the dough into 5 chunks of dough and place each piece of dough in a bowl.
  • Add gel food coloring to each bowl and mix with a spoon until dough is the desired color, about 3 drops of color to each dough section.
  • Next, place the dough on a piece of parchment paper, sprinkle the dough with flour and roll out to 1/2″ thickness.
  • Then take the heart cookie cutter and cut out hearts.
  • Remove the excess dough from around the edges and you are ready to stamp each cookie.
  • Take a cookie stamp and lay it on top of one of the hearts.
  • Press down gently and then remove the stamp and begin on the next cookie until all the cookies have been stamped.
  • Add cookies to cookie sheet using a spatula and bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven to a wire rack, and cool completely.
