History of Slushies
Slushies are such a classic summer treat. If you’ve been inside any convenience store or gas station, chances are you’ve seen their machines spinning, whirring, and just waiting for you to pour up a 54,000-ounce big gulp of slushie goodness.
Like so many food-related recipes and ideas, the slushie was a happy accident. In the late 1950s Omar Knedilik had the idea to create these partially frozen treats after his soda fountain broke down.
With no soda fountain to keep his sodas cool, Knedlik was forced to store them in a freezer to keep them cool. This caused them to become, you guessed it, slushy. The resulting partially frozen soda was such a hit with his customers that Knedlik decided to create a machine that made slushies out of carbonated beverages.
These days, the word slushie is used for just about any sort of partially frozen beverage, whether it be soda or something else.
