What is a Valentine Hot Chocolate Bomb?

Don’t know about hot chocolate bombs? They are self-contained capsules that melt into hot chocolate when you add hot milk. Think of them as bath-bomb-inspired cocoa mixes.

Many hot chocolate bombs like this one include more than simply sweetened cocoa powder. They incorporate a variety of other goodies such as a favorite candy bar, or sprinkles.

Very often a hot chocolate bomb recipe will include marshmallows. For those who prefer whipped cream to marshmallows, you are going to have to bend on this one.

Whipped cream doesn’t easily fit into a dissolvable bomb. However, there is no rule against adding your own whipped cream to the top once the hot chocolate is made.

Heart shaped cocoa bombs

The bomb is a sphere of a hot chocolate mix of your own concoction. Once made, you can easily store them in a jar on your counter top near your stovetop for access whenever you get the urge for a sweet delicious treat custom made to your liking.

Because of their appealing look, they make nice decor when you aren’t using them to make holiday drinks. If you don’t plan on enjoying the
cocoa together, or don’t want to be presumptuous, these Valentine hot chocolate bombs also make terrific gifts for a would-be significant other, or family and coworkers.

The Trick to a Hot Chocolate Bomb

You can’t make something as sweet as a hot chocolate bomb without having a mold. The mold is required to help form the shell of the bomb which will later be filled with the rest of the hot chocolate ingredients.

The mold you use needs to be large enough to contain the ingredients. Usually, the mold is for making spheres. However, since it’s Valentine’s Day and it will add to a more festive overall appearance I thought hearts were more appropriate.

Heart molds are easy to find after Christmas and New Year’s Day. The use of a more specific symbol of love only adds to the gesture and the overall reception of this gift or date night idea.

The best molds to use for this occasion are silicone molds because they are easily flexed in order to remove the molded content.

The Impact of a Valentine’s Day Hot Chocolate Bomb Hearts!

Besides the initial allure of a heart-shaped lump of chocolate, or a jar of heart-shaped chocolates tied up in a pretty red bow is that it looks so great without any thought to what the hot chocolate bomb is supposed to do.

The real impact comes from using the bomb and watching the perky fizzing action as the bomb begins to dissolve and do its work. The transformative quality of the hot chocolate bomb and the complete change from simple hot milk to a frothy and flavorful beverage is the main thing that makes these hot chocolate bombs as wildly popular as they are.

As the hot milk melts the outer shell of the bomb, the powder breaks free, and the marshmallows rise to the top. It’s fun to watch, especially for kids.

Valentine Hot Chocolate Bomb Hearts

The trick to making the outer shell of the Valentine hot chocolate bomb hearts come together around the internal cocoa mix is in making separate halves. Fuse the halves together at the end of the process.

First, chill your chocolate in molds. The molds should not be filled in, only coated with a solid layer of melted chocolate. The molds need to be refrigerated so that they can harden.

After about 15 minutes of chilling, you’ll line up half of the hearts with the open side up so that you can fill them. The other half will go in the skillet, face down, just enough to melt the rims.

Carefully place the rest of the chocolate hearts over the prepared bombs and allow the melted rims to dry, fusing the two sides together around the cocoa mix.

Don’t expect to get it absolutely perfect right away. There is some trial and error to get used to as you find exactly what works best when making each Valentine hot chocolate bomb.

Why Are Silicone Molds Better?

Most molds that do what we need them to do for this recipe are silicone. The more unique you want your shape to be, the higher the chance that the mold you use will be silicone.

Silicone molds may be more expensive, but they are much easier to use than the traditional hard plastic.

If your mold needs to have a certain aesthetic, particularly a detailed one with complex curves and edges, you need the silicone molds just to make sure the shapes come out unscathed.

The wrong mold could result in the wrong shape or broken/shattered chocolate shells. Silicone is bendable, stretchable, and flexible, so popping out your heart-shaped chocolate shells won’t be a problem.
