Did you know that the Amish intentionally make a mar or mistake of some sort when they make anything because they believe that only God can make anything perfectly? It’s true. We think that maybe that doesn’t extend to their cooking, because frankly, we’ve never had a bad Amish recipe, especially these absolutely delicious sugar cookies.
Since we discovered this recipe, we’ve made it for everything from holiday gatherings to afternoon snacking. They’ve made appearances at Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, potlucks, and as dessert after dinner. If we can find an excuse to make these, we do!
Amish Sugar Cookies
These cookies are completely homemade but they’re not difficult by any means. Sugar cookie dough is just about the easiest cookie dough to make, even though it’s also just about the tastiest! These cookies are rich and buttery and so soft. Every bite is like a piece of sweet pillowy Heaven!
We have a friend that lives near Amish country and she has a slew of recipe she shares with us. She always finds the best recipes. They are shared with her through friends and we share them in return. We have never made one we didn’t like. some we have loved! Like this Amish Sugar Cookie!! They are so delicious we find ourselves making them so often.
Amish Sugar Cookies Ingredients
This recipe only uses basic baking ingredients. In fact, you probably have them in your kitchen right now.
- Softened butter
- Vegetable oil
- Sugar, plus additional sugar for sprinkling on the cookies
- Powdered sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Eggs
- All-purpose flour
- Baking powder
- Cream of tartar

Amish Sugar Cookies Instructions
This easy recipe only takes a few simple steps and a few minutes of baking. You’ll be done in no time.
Step 1: Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a large bowl, beat the butter, vegetable oil, sugar, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Then, beat in the eggs one at a time. Set aside.
Step 2: Combine the Dry Ingredients
In another large bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and cream of tartar together.
Step 3: Make the Dough
Add half the flour mixture to the wet mixture and beat until just combined, then add the remaining flour and beat until combined.
Step 4: Scoop out the Cookies
Scoop the batter into 1 to 1 1/2 inch balls and place them on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle the top of each cookie with a pinch of sugar.
Step 5: Bake
Bake the Cookies at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes until they begin to lightly brown around the edges. Remove the cookies with a spatula, cool on a wire rack, and enjoy!
Hint: A cookie scoop is the best way to scoop the batter into cookie balls.

Tips
This recipe is super simple, but even so, we have some tips to ensure you make the absolute best cookies possible.
Fully Softened Butter – To get the creamy consistency you need for these cookies, be sure your butter is fully softened.
Don’t Overmix – It’s important that you only mix the dough until it’s just combined. This helps the cookies bake up properly.
Cool on a Rack – Immediately transfer your cookies to a wire rack to cool. You don’t want them to continue cooking on the baking sheet.

- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup vegetable oil

- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Instructions
