Knife being used to remove the sides of the brownies from the pan.

Step 1: Make the Brownies

Prepare the brownies according to the directions on the box. Let them cool a bit, then run a knife along the edge of the pan to release the brownies.

Step 2: Flip

Place a wire cooling rack on top of the pan and gently invert it onto the counter. Give the pan a firm tap around the bottom until the brownies release. When the brownies are out of the pan, place a piece of parchment paper on top and flip them again so they’re right-side up.

Step 4: Make the Black Frosting

Combine 1/2 cup of vanilla frosting with 3 drops of black food coloring. Then, add the frosting to a pastry bag and cut off a small tip.

Step 5: Decorate the Brownies

Frost each brownie with the plain vanilla frosting. Then, pipe a spiral of black frosting on top of the plain frosting, starting in the center. Drag the tip of a toothpick from the center of the frosting to the outside edge in a straight line. Repeat all around the top of the brownies to create the spider web effect.
