If you like Pina coladas? And now that we all have that song stuck in our head, just those two little words will send you on a thirst for more. While this is usually a summertime favorite, we have no issues in our house making this any time of the year.

There are so many ways to make Pina coladas. This fruity frozen pineapple drink is a tropical delight. You may not be able to get to the tropics right now but you can bring the tropics to you in less than 5 minutes!

One of the biggest reasons that we make this frosty beverage is because it’s a sipper that packs a punch. We love to have a cocktail that takes a while to drink so that we can sit and enjoy one another at the same time. Great cocktails bring about great conversations!

It seems we all have our favorite cocktails. The one’s that bring back many memories. Pina colada’s were one of the first cocktail I remember drinking when visiting the Islands years ago. The warm breezes, beautiful blue water and never ending pretty glasses with colorful umbrellas and matching straws.

What kind of Rum should I use?

Rum is a big component of making a Pina colada. I would suggest a good white rum. We love spiced rum but adding it to a this drink will definitely impact the flavor of the drink. Stick with a good plain white rum for this drink and keep the rest of the flavored rums for your other cocktails.

You can use a coconut rum if you like but honestly I think you get enough coconut flavor from the cream of coconut. And they don’t use coconut rum on any Island I’ve ever been on. Keep it real!

Can you use fresh pineapple instead of frozen?

You’re going to make to use the fresh chunks of pineapple as a garnish and frozen for the actual drink mixture. This is because you’re going to be blending up the frozen pineapple which helps to add to the thickness of the drink. Frozen pineapple allows you to use less ice and less pineapple juice. This way your not watering down your drink. We buy frozen pineapple chunks. You can cut and freeze fresh pineapple if you like but that’s too much work.

What other juice can you add to a Pina colada?

Pineapple juice is perfect for sweetness but it’s not the only choice. You can use orange juice as well for a variance of the citrus flavor. Although it’s not juice, a splash of lemonade might be a good choice as well. Keep in mind it will change the flavor of the cocktail but still makes a yummy drink.

Garnish your Pina Colada

So part of the fun of these drinks when you go to the Island’s are all the garnish’s they use. Sometimes you can even get these Pina coladas in real coconuts! You can bet if they come in a real coconut I’m getting it!

But when we are at home that’s not happening. But you will use some fresh cut pineapple slices and maraschino cherries. You could also use a lime wedge or a fresh sprig of mint if you choose. And I have a stash of fancy pants umbrella’s too. Add a colorful straw and it will be as close as you can get to paradise but you’ll be at home.

Tips For Making Pina Coladas

  • Use the cream of coconut for coconut milk for an even creamier texture in your Pina Colada. Both have the coconut flavoring that you’re looking for and can easily be interchanged. You can use coconut milk if you like a lighter cocktail.
  • If your drink melts a bit, don’t fret. Just stir and continue to enjoy. Since you’re adding minimal ice, as long as you stir as it melts, you shouldn’t have issues with it tasting water-downed.
  • To make your drink really festive and fun, add some of those cute little drink umbrellas! Nothing says a party like a colorful umbrella in your cocktail!
