🔪 How to Make Nutella Tart

Making this tart isn’t difficult at all. It’s a relatively straightforward recipe that even beginners should have no trouble with.

Step 1: Make the Crust Dough

Combine the butter, flour, and salt with a pastry cutter in a medium mixing bowl until you get coarse crumbs. Then, add the water in small amounts until you have just enough for the dough to come together into a ball.

Step 2: Roll Out the Dough

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface until it becomes a circle large enough to fit into a 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom.

Step 3: Prep for Baking

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then, place the dough into the tart pan and trim the edges. Next, cut a piece of parchment paper about the size of the pan and place it over the top of the crust. Add baking weights on top of the paper to prevent the rust from bubbling.

Step 4: Bake

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, remove the weights and paper and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes until the crust is lightly browned.

Step 5: Cool

Remove the tart pan from the oven and let the crust cool completely.

Step 6: Make the Nutella Filling

Combine heavy cream, Nutella, and butter in a small saucepan and cook over low heat until the butter is melted and all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Step 7: Pour and Chill

Pour the Nutella mixture into the tart pan and chill for 4 hours or until completely set.

Step 8: Make the Optional Whipped Cream

Beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a small bowl with a hand mixer until stiff peaks form.

Step 9: Decorate

Place the whipped cream in a piping bag and decorate the top of the tart as desired. Sprinkle with toasted hazelnuts.

Ingredients

Ingredients for the crust

  • ½ cup butter chilled
  • 1 ¼ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons ice cold water

Ingredients for the filling:

  • 1 ½ cups nutella
  • cup heavy whipping cream
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup toasted hazelnuts to garnish

Optional whipped cream garnish

  • ¾ cup whipping cream
  • 6 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

To make the crust

  • Place the ½ c of chilled butter, flour and salt into a medium sized mixing bowl and using a pastry cutter, combine until it resembles small crumbs.
  • Add in the water in small amounts until you have just enough for the dough to come together into a ball. (If the dough is soft, place it into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before rolling out.)
  • Lightly flour a hard surface and place the dough on it and roll it into a circle large enough to fit a 9” tart pan (with removable bottom).
  • Place the dough into the tart pan and trim the edges.
  • Cut a piece of parchment paper approximately the size of your pan and place over the top of the tart covering it completely.
  • Add whatever baking weights you have (lots of substitutes are available such as dried beans–pictured).
  • Place in the oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove the parchment paper (and weight) and continue to bake the crust for about 5-10 more minutes uncovered until the crust is lightly browned.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.

Nutella Filling

  • In a small saucepan, combine the ¾ c of heavy cream, nutella and butter and over low heat stir until the butter has melted and all ingredients are well incorporated.
  • Remove from heat and pour into the cooled tart crust.
  • Place into the refrigerator for about 4 hours to allow it to completely set.

Optional whipped cream:

  • Place ¾ c heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla into a small bowl and using an electric mixer or hand-held mixer, beat the ingredients until peaks form.
  • Place into a piping bag and decorate the top of the tart as desired.
  • Sprinkle it with toasted hazelnuts.
