Slow Cooker Brown Sugar Kielbasa FAQs

Do you have questions about this recipe? Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions.

Can I use a different type of sausage?

Yes! While smoked kielbasa works best for that classic flavor, you can substitute turkey smoked sausage, beef sausage, or even spicy andouille for a little extra kick.

Can I make slow cooker brown sugar kielbasa ahead of time?

Absolutely. You can prepare and cook it earlier in the day, then keep it on the “warm” setting in your slow cooker until ready to serve. It reheats beautifully, making it perfect for parties and potlucks.

How do I thicken the sauce?

The sauce will naturally thicken as it cooks. If you’d like it thicker, remove the lid during the last 20–30 minutes of cooking to allow excess liquid to evaporate and the glaze to caramelize.

Can I make this recipe on the stovetop?

Yes. Combine all ingredients in a large skillet or saucepan and simmer over medium-low heat for about 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

Is this recipe spicy?

It has just a mild warmth from the chili powder. If you prefer more heat, add cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, or sliced jalapeños.

How do I store leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until warmed through.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Yes. Allow the kielbasa to cool completely, then store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
