  • Pork chops – We like to use 3/4 – 1-inch thick pork chops for this recipe.
  • Onion – We use a yellow onion, you can also use a sweet onion.
  • Mushrooms – We like to use fresh button mushrooms, but canned ones also work in a hurry.
  • Seasonings – You will need salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika to season the meat.
  • Flour – All-purpose flour is great for breading your pork chops.
  • Oil – We like to use canola oil, you can also use olive oil.

🔪 How to Make These Smothered Pork Chops With Mushrooms

  1. In a small bowl, combine the seasonings, and then sprinkle the seasoning mixture evenly over both sides of the pork chops.

  1. Throughly coat each pork chop in flour on both sides.

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet, and once it’s hot sauce the pork chops on both sides. Remove and set aside.

  1. To the same pan add the sliced onions and cook until almost tender. Once tender add the mushrooms. Cook for another 1-2 minutes. Add the flour to the skillet.

  1. Stir in the flour, and then slowly add the water string constantly. Add the remaining seasonings. Bring the gravy to a boil.

  1. Return the pork chops to the pot, and cover with a lid. Allow the pork chops to simmer for one hour or until they reach your desired tenderness.

Storage – Store leftover pork chops in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 4 Pork chops 3/4 – 1 in thick
  • 1 onion thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms we used button mushrooms
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ cup all purpose flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  • In a small bowl combine the seasoning mix.
  • Rub some of the seasoning mix on each pork chop. Save the leftover seasoning for the onion gravy. Then thoroughly coat each pork chop with the flour and set aside. Heat oil in a skillet over medium – high heat. When oil is hot enough add pork chops and brown for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  • Using the same pan add sliced onions to the drippings and cook for a few minutes then add mushrooms and cook a few minutes more.
  • Add the remaining flour to the skillet and stir together incorporating the onions and mushrooms then slowly add 2 cups of water and stir. Add additional seasoning if you like at this point.
  • Bring to a boil over medium heat. Return pork chops to skillet and reduce heat to low/ simmer. Cover and cook for about 1 hour.

Notes

We typically use fresh mushrooms for this recipe; however, if you are in a hurry, you can also use canned mushrooms.

    Family loved these!! However, 1h is way too long to cook 3/4″ boneless chops. I cooked mine for 20 minutes and they were moist and juicy. No shrooms for me.
