Cake Mix Truffles with M&Ms
Cake mix truffles are easy to make treats that don’t have exotic ingredients, making them the perfect dessert or sweet snack for everyone in the family. These cake mix truffles are so good, so easy, and so satisfying for everyone at any gathering that you’ll want to keep them in heavy rotation when it’s time to do some baking.
The thing that makes this recipe so great is how universal it is. There are some recipes that just don’t work outside of a certain time of the year or holiday season. For example, candy cane-based treats make the most sense around Christmas time, while ice cream-based desserts are best reserved for the warm months.
These cake mix truffles, however, are perfect any time of the year. They’re great at backyard bashes and Independence Day celebrations or as a sweet treat collection on a Christmas platter come the holidays. They also make excellent Valentine’s Day treats or simply a tasty dessert during the week. They also feature M&M candies, and who doesn’t love those?
Cake Mix Truffles are So Easy and So Good
In addition to being tasty, these truffles are super easy to make. The only cooking you do at all is baking, and the ingredients couldn’t be simpler. All you need is cream cheese, yellow cake mix, powdered sugar, and M&Ms. That’s it. You won’t find an ingredient list much simpler than that.
Baking up these truffles is equally simple. Just beat the cream cheese until fluffy, add the cake mix and mix, and roll into balls, and bake. When you’re done, press an M&M in the center, and you’re done. It’s almost completely foolproof.

How to treat raw flour or cake mix
Although some people aren’t worried about eating raw flour, it’s NOT recommended and never a good idea in my book. Killing the bacteria is simple by heating-treating the flour or cake mix. This is totally up to you but I think it’s a good idea to do this easy step.
For the microwave… A good rule of thumb to follow is to microwave the flour or cake mix for 1 minute and 15 seconds on high, stirring after 15 second intervals. Then go on with the recipe. So simple and safe!
For the oven… Spread flour or cake mix on a parchment lined baking sheet with edges. Preheat oven to 350° F. Bake for about 5 minutes. Let cool completely before use.
Either process can be done days before you start making your cake mix truffles.
Truffle Variations
So we’ve covered how simple and easy these cake mix truffles are. There’s something else that makes these truffles amazing, as well – their ease of variation. These truffles are the perfect base for an almost endless variety of delicious options.
Try Different Cake Mixes
This recipe calls for yellow cake mix, but the beauty of this recipe is that you can use any cake mix you like. You can completely change this recipe simply by using a different cake mix.
If you’ve ever bought cake mix at the store – and who hasn’t, really – you know that there are more cake mix flavors than you can shake a spoon at. From classics like chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet to fun novelty cake mixes like funfetti, there are endless options to change things up.
Try Different Candies
You can use all sorts of different candies in this recipe. Reese’s Pieces work well. So do all kinds of baking morsels. You’ll find fun flavored morsels to experiment with in the baking aisle. They have everything from classic semi-sweet, milk, and dark chocolate morsels to butterscotch, salted caramel, and even toffee flavors. Any of these would be perfect as the centerpiece to your cake mix truffles.
Change up the Cream Cheese
This recipe is so versatile, you can even change the cream cheese you use. You can find fruit-infused cream cheese to try for a little something different.
You can also add various ingredients to your cream cheese to change the flavor. For example, you could add creamy peanut butter to your cream cheese to create a peanut butter cream cheese. Add some cocoa and a bit of sugar for chocolate cream cheese. There are tons of possibilities.
Put it all Together
Of course, you don’t have to stop at changing just one thing. You can revamp your cake mix truffles from the ground up. Try using chocolate cake mix, adding peanut butter to your cream cheese, and using Reese’s Pieces (or even Reese’s Minis) as a topper, and you have a completely new dessert.
Another example is using strawberry cake mix, regular cream cheese, and white chocolate morsels for a strawberry explosion of flavor. There are so many possibilities, you’ll never run out of options.
Don’t forget you can also melt chocolate and dip your cake mix truffles into the chocolate also. White, milk or dark chocolate are all delicious. Dip the truffle then place any candy your using on top gently.
Serving Cake Mix Truffles
The easiest way to serve these truffles is to simply set them out on a tray and let everyone grab one. They make an excellent dessert platter for parties and the holidays.
The best time to serve these truffles is any time. They’re great for birthday parties, holidays, special events, and a general dessert or sweet treat to keep on hand.
Storing Cake Mix Truffles
You can store your cake mix truffles for up to five days in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Unlike other cookies, with 8 ounces of cream cheese in the recipe, it’s better to be safe than sorry and refrigerate these.
For longer storage and bigger batches, you can freeze these cookies in an airtight freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag. To thaw, simply leave them on the counter for an hour or two.
