🛒Ingredients
This is a dish that takes minimal effort and minimal ingredients to make. Here is all you need to whip this up for dinner any night of the week.
- Chicken: For this recipe, opt for boneless chicken. We opted for boneless chicken breast, but thighs and tenderloins also work great.
- Chicken Gravy: Buy the packets of gravy for this recipe. It will be a nice condensed powder that will perfectly richen the dish.
- Cream Soup: Cream of chicken soup is the perfect thick base for slow-cooking the chicken for optimal flavor.
- Chicken Stock: Grab some chicken stock or even water to add moisture to the recipe, keeping the chicken nice and moist as it slowly cooks.
- Pepper: Season the chicken with some black pepper to add more flavor.
🔪 How to Make Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
This chicken and gravy recipe is pretty simple. Here is a quick walkthrough of how to make this crockpot chicken and gravy.
Start by adding the gravy packets in the slow cooker with the cream of chicken soup, and stock, and pepper. Mix well until creamy.
Add chicken breasts to the slow cooker and press down into the liquid.
Cover and cook on low heat for 5-6 hours or until the chicken is fully cooked. Then serve with potatoes or rice.
📝Variations
Check out these easy ways to change up the recipe a bit. Here is a list of different ways to alter the crock pot recipe a bit.
- Bone-in Chicken: Add a longer cooking time to the chicken if you opt for bone-in chicken. It will take a few hours longer to cook.
- Cream Soups: You can use any cream of condensed soup, including mushroom, celery, etc. Feel free to use any type of soup.
- Cream Cheese: For the last 30 minutes, add cream cheese to the dish. Let it warm up, and then stir to create an ultra-creamy chicken.
- Bone Broth: Consider swapping the chicken stock or water with a bone broth for a bit more protein.
- Cayenne Pepper: Elevate the flavor and add a little heat with cayenne pepper. You could also use hot sauce or crushed red pepper.
🥄 Equipment
- Slow Cooker
- Measuring Cups
- Wooden Spoon or Spatula
🥫 Storage
Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for 3-4 days in the fridge. When you want to eat any, just warm in the microwave or in a skillet on the stovetop. Heat slowly, or it will burn the gravy.
You can also freeze any of the leftovers as well. Place in a freezer container and freeze for 1-2 months. Then defrost straight from the freezer or place in the fridge overnight to slow thaw. Then reheat as you would like.
Serve With
This chicken and gravy is great served over mashed potatoes, rice, or even pasta. Then pair with a crisp salad, roasted carrots, creamy corn, or even this cucumber salad.
Pick and choose any or all of your favorites to go along with this chicken dinner.
What would you serve this chicken dish over?
We like it served over rice or mashed potatoes and we usually make a side of stuffing to go with it.
💭 Tips
- Make sure the chicken is submerged in the liquid or it can dry out the meat.
- Use a meat thermometer to check the doneness of the chicken. It should read 165 degrees F internally.
- Make sure to mix up the gravy packets and stock before you put the chicken in so you get an even flavor.
- You can double or even triple the recipe, make sure you have enough room in the slow cooker.

I made this last night. It was very easy and my husband LOVED it! Definitely going on my dinner menu!! Thanks so much for sharing this great recipe!!
So glad you and your husband loved it Debbie. It’s a family favorite for us too! And so easy ๐
When I pull the chicken out to shed it I add stuffing mix to it. The best chicken dressing that is quick and easy.
Sounds great! Can you leave the chicken whole? Also when you add the stuffing mix is there any gravy left to pour over, or do you remove some first?
We have never tried it with whole chicken. We use boneless skinless chicken breast or thighs. We don’t add stuffing to this. We serve it with stuffing on the side. If you want to try adding stuffing I think there would be enough gravy as it makes a lot. But we have never made it that way so I can’t guarantee it
I’m going to make this to top waffles for a work potluck! Yummy!
That sounds delicious! I hope it’s a big hit. Enjoy
Can this be done on high heat?
We have only made this on low heat but I think high heat would be ok just watch that the chicken breast doesn’t dry out. That why we prefer low heat.
I made this today after waking up with a migraine and zero desire to cook. I added some boursin cheese at the end…*chef’s kiss* Awesome recipe that I will make even on non-migraine days! Thank you!
So sorry about your migraine! I’m glad you found this easy recipe to make. The Boursin at the end sounds so good! We will give that a try.
So easy and so delicious. Served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli and carrots. Was a hit this evening. Thank you!
Thank you and so happy you liked this easy recipe! It’s one of our favorites ๐
I plan to make this soon, quick question though, do you mix the gravy packets according to packet directions or just empty them in with the cream of chicken and broth?!
Just empty them in with everything. do not mix them with water!
I like the easy of this recipe. I would recommend using low/reduced sodium dry gray mix and soup. I used chicken tenders seasoned only with black pepper for the recipe and added egg noodles for the last 15-20 minutes for a chicken noodle dinner. Delicious.
So glad you enjoyed it
Can I substitute cream of mushroom for the cream of chicken?
Yes you can really use almost any cream soup. Cream of celery works well too. We use cream of chicken since the recipe uses chicken.
Can you use frozen chicken?
Yes just just the cooking time we always use defrosted or fresh
The recipe says to cook on low for 5 – 6 hours. Will it be okay to cook it on low for 8 – 9 hours?
No you will overcook the chicken. 5-6 hour is the max I would suggest. There is nothing worse than dried out chicken!
8 hours on low wonโt dry out the chicken. I cooked it on low for 8 hours and it was great!
We never cook chicken tenders on low for 8 hours. chicken breast if they are large yes but you can try it and see how it works for you.
Have you ever tried broth instead of stock? If so was it ok?
Yes either one will work fine. Enjoy!
Hello. I made this last night. I only had a can of cream of potato and a package of Pioneer brown gravy mix which is double size of regular gravy packets so only used one packet. Big hit! Served over stuffing with a side of green beans. Super easy delicious meal after working in our yard several hours. Yes we live in the south :-). I will be adding this to my cookbook it was delicious and super simple!
So glad you enjoyed it! This is a very versatile recipe (one of the things we love about it) so you can use almost any soup with it within reason lol.
I made this last night and my partner and I loved it! Great taste and easy to make. Just wish the gravy was a little thicker, but I will definitely make it again. I’m served it over bread with mashed potatoes and corn. 5 stars!
Thanks so much Deena! So happy you loved it. If you want a thicker gravy you can try cutting the broth down some. We find if it sits a little once it’s cooked the gravy thickens up a bit.
Hi Iโm cooking this right now but I donโt have the packets of the chicken gravy I have the cans , and I do not have the cream of chicken soup but I have regular chicken broth . Do you think it would work ?
No it won’t work. It will come out more like soup than a chicken & gravy. I would make something else and wait until you have the right ingredients. also I sugest you use 1 package brown gravy for better flavor
I made this last night and my girls LOVED it! They loved it so much that we didnโt have any leftovers. Thank you for the recipe
I’m so glad it was a big hit! We love it. It’s easy and always delicious
Does this recipe still work if you double the amount of chicken, do I double the amounts of everything else like the gravy packets and soup cans? Or would that be too much gravy mix or soup?
It really depends on how much gravy you like. We have used more chicken, but not double and it’s worked fine. Everyone loves the gravy for mashed potatoes and rice
so it really depends on what your tastes are. But adding more chicken would work. If your doubling though I persona;;y would add more gravy and soup
If you double the recipe does it add to cook time?
I would still cook it the same time but just check it and maybe add more time if you need it.
Can I use chicken thighs instead?
Yes you can!
This is soooo good! Everyone loved it. Served over mashed potatoes with a side of green beans. Yum!
Thank you Dixie! So happy everyone loved it. We make this often since it’s so easy and everyone in the family loves it
Can you use chicken tenders instead of chicken breasts?
You would need to adjust your cooking time. The chicken tenders would cook much faster and dry out if you cook them too long
Can I use frozen chicken or does it need to be thawed?
You can use frozen you may have to add a little on the cook time
Would it be okay to use a peppered gravy along with the chicken gravy?
If that’s the flavor you would like YES! That sounds really good! ๐
Oh shoot, I just realized I only have one packet of gravy mix. Would it turn out really bland with just one packet? My son loves this recipe so I cook it often, but heโs very picky. Should I hold off on cooking it until I get that second gravy mix?
I would hold off. We have always used 2 packages and always mix chicken and brown gravy. You could also mix chicken and turkey.
Made it with rotisserie chicken in a pot, and it was amazing.
so glad you enjoyed this easy meal! Great idea with the rotisserie chicken!
Tried this recipe tonight, added little sour cream at the end. Served/ w brown rice tossed with steamed peas an carrots ๐ฅ, so good. Thank you
Thank you so glad you enjoyed it! It’s so easy and always a family favorite for us
I put petite potatoes and baby carrots in it for a complete meal. Delicious ๐
Sounds so good Sarah! ๐
I love this recipe and make it to feed a large number of people (tripled, of course). I love it because you can substitute different flavors of soup if you donโt have whatโs called for. I use cream of chicken, cream of mushroom or cream of celery and always get compliments! Thank you!
Thanks Connie so happy you like this recipe. It is one of our favorites too! ๐
Hi great recipe I did it a little different. I was in a hurry so I cheated and bought two rotisserie chickens did it on high for 3 hours and used garlic powder in addition to pepper poured over uncle bens jasmine ready rice turned out amazing ๐คฉ
That sounds like a great meal! I may try that too ๐
Very good!! I followed the recipe, used one chicken and one brown for the gravy packets. I put some herbs from my garden in the crock pot for the last half hour. My husband also loved it, will make again! Thanks!
So glad you enjoyed it! It’s one of our favorites and I love your additions!
It was amazing. I’m making it again tonight!
So happy you liked this! ๐ It’s definitely a favorite for us!
I was concerned about the sodium and the dish being salty so here is what I did. First I used boneless thighs instead of breasts (preference). I used 1 cup of water and 3/4 cup of low-sodium chicken broth. I mixed everything prior to putting it in the slow cooker so I could adjust the taste as I needed to. This was so delicious and will be in my rotation.
So glad you enjoyed this recipe!
I mixed in a can of green beans and 2 cans of stems and pieces mushrooms, my super market has large chicken breast 2 of them would have worked out better. After thought I shouldโve used about of 1 cup of baby carrots and maybe chopped them up a bit to make them smaller, over all this dish came out great, great comfort food
Sounds like delicious additions!
Was great I used boneless skinless thighs instead of breasts. And tasted wonderful
So glad you liked it! Thighs work great!
Can I cook this on high?
Yes but I would keep an eye on it you don’t want the chicken to dry out
Made this tonight. So easy and delicious!! Will definitely make again.
So glad you liked it. It’s a favorite in our house
This was fast, easy and very delicious! We will definitely make this again. Good recipe to use up leftover turkey.
So glad you liked it! We love it it’s so easy
This chicken and gravy dish was great! I will definitely be making it again! So easy to make! Thank you!!,
You’re very welcome. So glad you enjoyed it!
I am cooking this right now and did just what is printed and it is looking very thin liquid not what I excpected itโs been cooking 3 hrs what is wrong
The gravy is thinner but we like it for over rice that way. You can add a cornstarch slurry to thicken it up
I made the crockpot chicken. It was excellent. I made it with one packet of brown and one with turkey gravy.
So glad you liked it! We always use brown gravy mix with ether chicken or turkey. Both work really well
Would you double the amount if you had 3 large chicken breast?
We normally use 3-4 breasts and don’t have to double the gravy or stock. I think you should be fine
This was exceptionally good. I followed the recipe and used the brown gravy and the cream of chicken soup. It tasted so good and the chicken cooked perfectly. I also made mashed potatoes and green beans. I will be using this recipe again. โค๏ธ
So happy you enjoyed it!!
Can I use country gravy instead of brown/chicken?
That sounds great but we have never tried it. I think it will be different but delicious!
Just finished cooking this in the crockpot. The only variation was a 1/2 cup of sour cream right at the end. I put it over egg noodles. I highly recommend this, especially for the cooler months. I’m demo_ing fall recipes now. Thanks for this.
Thanks Bob that sounds delicious. This recipe is so easy to add things to. glad you enjoyed it
This was a win in our house tonight. Itโs hard to please a family of 9 every night. Someone is always disappointedโฆ but not tonight. Thank you
I’m so lad everyone loved it! It’s a dinner we make often.
At what point do you shred the chicken? And how long should it cook in the gravy once shredded?
You shred it when it is finished cooking. Once yu shred it add back to the gravy and serve
Thank you so much!!!!
I just submitted this question again,I forgot that I already asked it ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ. Please just disregard!! Iโm excited to make this tomorrow.
I could not find anything in the recipe as far as when to shred the chicken. Is it just at the end of the cook time and then serve? Or should the chicken be shred and then leave it In the crockpot for another hour or whatever? I am Cooking this tomorrow, so Iโm just wondering at what point to take the chicken out for shredding!
